Grooved press roll is a more recent innovation in trasverse-press design with higher dewatering efficiency.
The structure of groove press roll is stone roller and rubber roller. The spiral grooves with width of 0.5-0.6 mm, depth of 1.0-3.5 mm and groove distance of about 3.0-3.6 mm are cut out on the rubber layer of the cot with alloy steel knife.
Compared with ordinary press, grooved press is easy to dehydrate, the linear pressure is lower and the thickness of rubber layer is increased. Therefore, the middle height of the roller can be reduced to avoid the high and uneven water content on both sides of the paper, resulting in the rib channel.

Advantages

1.Compared with common press roll, groove press roll dewater easily, demanding lower linear pressure and thicker rubber coating better to reduce the crowing of the roll, to avoid the uneven dewatering.
2.When the groove roller is used, the line pressure of the press can be increased without the danger of crushing and producing image. The paper web after pressing has high dryness and even dehydration.

Application

The grooved press roll is always applied to middle or high speed paper making machine.It can undergo higher linar pressure.
The grooves in the roll cover provide easily accessible receptacles for the expelled  water.The helically cut grooves are typically 0.100 inch in depth,0.020 inch wide on 0.125 inch center.The maximum lateral distance for water travel in the grooves press is therefor ,only 0.050 inches,as compared to typical figures of 0.2 and 0.75 inch respectively for the suction press and plain press.Since the grooved roll is solid,higher pressure can be appied .
The water caught in the groove is thrown off by centrifugal force and the roll is cleaned by suction of sprays and doctor.

Grooved Press Roll vs others

Stainless steel grooved roller is widely used because it is not easy to deform. However, it is necessary to prevent pressing vibration or obvious groove marks on the paper.
