Vacuum press roll is mostly used in medium and high speed paper machines. The upper roller of vacuum press is stone roller, and the lower roller is vacuum roller. The structure of the vacuum roller is basically the same as that of the vacuum couch roll. The roll shell is made of bronze or stainless steel, and the thickness of the shell is determined by the required stiffness and strength. Other working parameters of the paper machine, such as speed and vacuum degree, remain unchanged. The thicker the roll shell is, the smaller the dewatering capacity is. In high-speed papermaking, the moisture in the blanket and wet paper is sucked out, passes through the eyelet on the roller, and then turns around the vacuum suction area before being thrown into the white water pan by the centrifugal force of the roller. The function of the vacuum chamber is only used to suck the air in the hole of the shell. The thicker the roller shell is, the more the volume of air is pumped. Therefore, the vacuum roller with thin shell made of high-strength metal is beneficial to improve the press dehydration efficiency.
Blind hole press roll is another kind of improved roller developed on the basis of groove roller in 1970s. Rubber or polyurethane are hung on the iron roll core. A blind hole with a diameter of 2 mm and a depth of 12-15 mm was drilled on the rubber coated surface. It can also drill two rows of blind holes with different depth and depth. The opening rate of blind hole roller is about 25% - 30%, and its eyehole volume is about 5 times larger than that of groove roller, so it can accommodate more press water. The solid part of the blind hole roller is not as easy to be damaged as the groove roller, so the roller can be covered with a soft rubber layer, about 70-90 shore hardness. As a result, the wear of the blanket can be reduced, and a wider pressing area can be provided, which is beneficial to increase the linear pressure in the pressing zone. Compared with the groove roller with 2.5mm groove depth, the blind hole with a depth of 15mm can be ground many times more than the groove roller before gluing again.

Compared with ordinary press, grooved press is easy to dehydrate, the linear pressure is lower and the thickness of rubber layer is increased. Therefore, the middle height of the roller can be reduced to avoid the high and uneven water content on both sides of the paper, resulting in the rib channel. When pressing, the direction of the blanket and wet paper is also important. At the press outlet, the wet paper should be separated from the blanket as soon as possible, and the blanket should also be separated from the groove roller as soon as possible, so as to avoid moisture returning to the blanket and the wet paper sheet. It is necessary to keep the groove of groove press clean to prevent blocking, and pay attention to the drainage of water in the groove. When the speed of the paper machine is high, the groove roller needs to be equipped with a soft scraper to remove the high-pressure water from the groove to the roll surface.
The main function of the press section of a paper machine is to reduce the moisture content of the web by mechanical extrusion and improve the dryness of the web when it enters the drying section.
